Spring 2016, day 46 of bird ringing

A really hot day today with significantly less bids, around 60 in the constant effort site. The Garden Warbler (Sylvia borin, Κηποτσιροβάκος) is still the most common species by far being half of the birds trapped. Daily totals can be found here:

Spring 2016, day 45 of bird ringing

Garden warblers are reaching their peak with more of the half ringed today belonging to them. Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata, Σταχτομυγοχάφτης) are all around the place are was the second most common species at the ringing table. Sand Martin (Riparia riparia, Οχθοχελίδονο) are still around but in lower numbers. The bird of the day though […]

Spring 2016, day 40 of bird ringing

The weather have been exceptionally unsteady this season and once more we could not set up nets for two consecutive days. The first net round was quite exiting as we got three Nightjars (Caprimulgus europaeus, Γιδοβύζι; one at the constant effort site and two one at the opportunistic) and 8 Golden Orioles (Oriolus oriolus, Συκοφάγος). […]

Still low number (22 birds) as the morning was windy. The winds have faded and quite a few birds make their appearance in the busses.  Daily totals can be found here:

Spring 2016, Day 6 of Bird Ringing

Even less birds than yesterday today, with grand total of 24 ringed birds (19 at the constant efforts site). A nice surprise was the three European Serin (Serinus serinus, Σκαρθάκι) that was trapped for the first time for this season. The day of the season though was a beautiful Pallid Harrier (Circus macrourus, Στεπόκιρκος) that […]

Raptor count. Day 20. Booted Eagles.

After a few days of great passage, the migration has slowed down. Probably we have seen the peak of the honey buzzards on the island. From now on, less and less adults are expected to pass while the juvenile passage is going to increase. We had today the first spotting of booted eagles: one dark […]

Raptor Count 2015. Day 19. Back to the future, Egyptian Vulture and a lot of birds.

At last, the electrical problems on the island have been fixed and we are back in the present times, with electrical power and internet connection. Many thanks to Fotini, the doctor of the island, who let us cook at her place! The first day with no electricity has been a good day for the eyes […]
