Blue-cheeked Bee-eater!
A rare visitor for Antikythira and the greater area overall, a Blue-cheeked Bee-eater Merops persicus observed yesterday at the eastern part of the island. One more specimen had been ringed here in spring 2004.

An Antikythirian Great Reed Warbler in Samos!
A Great Reed Warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus that was initially ringed on Antikythira during spring season in 2008 were trapped by Maria & Eleni two days ago in Samos. The strong winds though did not let us work today….

Sparrowhawk!
At the first net round we trapped a Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus. Except from that the day was quite slow. The prevailing East wind seems that drove the birds away from the island. Two new for the season
The Icterine Warblers Hippolais icterina have just arrived. Except from that a Spanish Sparrow Passer hispaniolensis was trapped as well. The latter have been around for some days though. As you can see in the picture today we trapped our first Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus. Comparing to last year there are very few around but on the other hand they might have not arrived yet. Spotted Flycatcher
The first Spotted Flycatcher Muscicapa striata appeared today. It was a slow morning until around 10 o’clock the valley filled up with swallows and swifts. First Eleonora..
The first sighting of Eleonora’s Falcon Falco eleonorae today, just a few days earlier than last year. Most of the birds will disperse in mainland before their settlement to the colony during the summer.(Photo archive)
