day 27 of ringing

 Nets are open again! A Spanish Sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis,  Χωραφοσπουργίτης) day with a quite a big flock of them flying along the nets the hole netting period. Day 24 of ringing

  It was a Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur, Τρυγόνι) and Woodchat Shrike (Lanius senator, Κοκκινοκεφαλάς) day. They were everywhere and they in our nets every net round. The weather this morning was not perfect for ringing but at least we were able to open nets.   Another day of song winds and rain.  It seems that the spring is delayed. Despite that we managed to reach 58 observed species for today.

 The first Black-eared Wheatear (Oenanthe hispanica, Ασπροκωλίνα) trapped for this season. Two new traps for the season. The Eurasian Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus, Συκοφάγος) which was observed for the first time two days ago and the Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata, Σταχτομυγοχάφτης). It feels that it has been too many days with strong winds but fortunately according to the forecast the weather will be better tomorrow.

The first Elonora’s Falcon

The first observation of Eleonora’s Falcon (Falco eleonorae, Μαυροπετρίτης) for this spring! Few of them visit the colony earlier than the majority of the birds that is foraging over mainland Greece.
