Back in business and new arrivals / Day 7 of ringing
The weather was good as predicted. The first net round we got only Robins (Erithacus rubecula, Κοκκινολαίμης), Chiffchaffs (Phylloscopus collybita, Δεντροφυλλοσκόπος) and Blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla, Μαυροσκούφης) making it feel more like autumn than spring. Later on though we got out new arrivals for the seasons. In other words we got our first Marsh Warbler (Acrocephalus […]

The first Corn Bunting (Emberiza calandra, Τσιφτάς) where recorded today while the slope sided that where protected from wind where turned yellow by fairly large flocks of Yellow Wagtails (Motacilla flava, Κιτρινοσουσουράδα)

New species for the ringing list / Day 4 of ringing
The Spotted Crake (Porzana porzana, Στικτοπουλάδα; photo1) that was trapped today made our day. It is not so often we have the chance to see this bird from close by. Apart from that it was a slow day , with Chiffchaffs (Phylloscopus collybita, Δεντροφυλλοσκόπος) and Subalpine Warbler (Sylvia cantillans, Κοκκινοτσιροβάκος; photo 2) being the most […]

Wind and new arrivals / Day 3 of Ringing
The weather was sunny and calm during the first days and made me to forget that it is usually cloudy and wind during March, as today. The north wind though brought us three new species for the season : Savi’s Warblers (Locustella luscinioides, Καλαμοτριλιστής; photo 1), Nightingales (Luscinia megarhynchos, Αηδόνι) and a Sand Martin (Riparia […]

To keep up with last spring record we need 4 more rarities! A new species for the season was the Lesser Whitethroat (Sylvia curruca, Βουνοτσιροβάκος; photo 2) and the […]

Spring season 2012 / Day 1 of ringing
Needless to say we are happy to be back! The nets were put yesterday and today we were ready to ring. The species trapped today were mainly short distant migrants with just a few long distance ones! The first bird to be ringed was a Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita, Δεντροφυλλοσκόπος; photo 1) while the surprise of […]
