Volunteering in Agras – Vritta – Nisi Wetland

Changing of season.

This week during the bird monitoring we notice the first winter changing… We found a new specie, that comes here for the cold days, it’s the Podiceps Nigricollis. A small duck, very similar in the behaviour than the Tachybaptus ruficollis (that is very common here). It can dive for a very long time to find some food. It’s a very cute one, it’s black and white in winter. We saw three of them this Wednesday, I hope we gonna see more of them next week !

We also notice that the colours of the Aythya Ferrina and the Aythya Nyroca are changing. The Ferrina male is becoming whiter, as the female is putting her dark dress.

We also had the chance to see through the telescope a Circus Aeruginosus hunting a Fulica Atra. It was amazing. The Circus was trying to catch the little Fulica Atra, forcing it to dive again and again and again. I think he wanted to exhaust the little one. Finally the raptor abandon the fight and let its pray live. It was so great to see that !

In a very different subject, yesterday with all the volunteers, we went to the school just in front of the house to present ourselves to the children that say hello to us each day.

We enter in the building for the first time and we were welcomed as very special guest. The parents prepared some food because they knew we were coming.

And the children were very excited to meet us, I guess they were expecting us for a long time.

Each of us has to present himself in front of them, speak about his country, his city and anything about his life.

It was very funny, because we were speaking in English an Irini (our mentor) was translating in Greek so they could understand. And when the children were speaking to us in Greek, I felt like a 3 years old baby who couldn’t answer. That was a very special experience !

Changement de saison.

Cette semaine pendant l’observation des oiseaux nous avons remarqué les premiers changements de l’hiver… Nous avons découvert une nouvelles espèce, qui arrive ici en même temps que les jours froid, c’est le Podiceps Nigricollis. Un petit canard, avec un comportement assez identique au Tachybaptus ruficollis (qui est très commun ici). Il peut plonger pendant un temps très long pour trouver de la nourriture. Il est très mignon, il est noir et blanc en hiver. Nous en avons observé trois ce mercredi. J’espère qu’on en verra plus dans les semaines à venir !

Nous avons aussi remarqué que l’Aythya Ferrina et l’Aythya Nyroca avaient changé de couleur. Le Ferrina mâle devient plus blanc, et la femelle revêt sa robe somble.

Il nous a été donné la chance d’assister, à travers le télescope, à une scène plus rare : le Circus Aeruginosus chassant un Fulica Atra. C’était fou ! Le Circus essayait d’attraper le petit Fulica Atra dans ses griffes, le forçant à plonger encore et encore et encore. Je pense qu’il voulait l’épuiser. Finalement, le rapace abandonna le combat et laissa vivre sa proie. C’était impressionnant à voir !

Dans un sujet complètement différent, hier, avec tous les autres volontaires, nous sommes allés à l’école en face de notre maison pour nous présenter aux enfants, qui nous saluent tous les jours.

Nous sommes entrés dans le bâtiment pour la première fois et nous avons été accueillit comme des rois. Les parents avaient préparé des gâteaux et des crêpes parce qu’ils savaient que nous venions. Et les enfants étaient vraiment excités à l’idée de nous rencontrer. Je suppose qu’ils attendaient ça depuis longtemps.

Chacun de nous devait se présenter, parler de son pays, de sa ville et de ce que l’on voulait sur nous.

C’était vraiment drôle, parce que nous parlions en anglais et Irini (notre tutrice) traduisait en grec pour qu’ils puissent comprendre. Et quand les enfants nous parlaient directement, en grec évidement, je me sentais comme un môme de trois ans qui ne peut pas répondre à ce qu’il ne comprend pas !. C’était une expérience vraiment particulière !
