The first Greek volunteers !

Hi, my name is Vasilis and I am 28. I am from Ptolemaida but the last 3 years I lived in Thessaloniki. I am a Greek volunteer of H.O.S for about 1 and a half year in the Thessaloniki team. I always liked the animals but I never thought that I get so much involved with birds. My first contact with the birds was about 2 years ago when I did a bird watching with a friend in the Agras-Nisi-Vryta wetland. It was a magnificent experience and from the first time I got in love with the birds !! I couldn’t imagine before that there are so many different birds in Greece! So I became a volunteer of H.O.S in the Thessaloniki and started to learn a lot of things about birds. And the more things I learned about birds, the more I wanted to participate in more voluntary programs. I think it was the last summer that I heard the first time about the voluntary programs of H.O.S in summer but I wasn’t ready for them yet. After a year full of voluntary service in Thessaloniki I decided that this summer I had to go in one of the summer voluntary programs of H.O.S. I choose Agras-Nisi-Vrita wetland because I really liked the location and I knew that I will have seen many beautiful birds. When we first came, me and another Greek volunteer, Alvin (I hope I write your name correct!!), I really liked the house. It was very big for my taste but it was a very beautiful one. After two day unfortunately Alvin had to go back so I remained the only volunteer in the house. But that gave me the reason to take the bike and explore the wetland alone. The location was more beautiful with bike than with the car. Cycling along the wetland I was feeling part of the wetland and the birds weren’t afraid of me so much, so I had the opportunity to see the nature of the wetland with a more natural way than before. The people from Vrita, the village we are staying in, were very friendly, so immediately I felt as one of them. Me and Eirini, the mentor of volunteers in the wetland, did a lot of maintenance works to get ready the house for the EVS volunteers. But we also had a small trip, together with two friends of her, to the mountains near the wetland and we saw that the mountains were as beautiful as the wetland. At the end of the first week Evelina, a volunteer from Italy, came. Me, Evelina and Sofia, the responsible for EVS program in northern Greece, finished the maintenance of the house. To celebrate the new arrival we went to the café of the village to drink and chat with the locals. When we went back to the house we did a small surprise party for Sofia because was her birthday!! The days passed with a lot of bird monitoring, voluntary services and small trips with the bike. Now that this beautiful journey of memories comes to the end, I am really sad of leaving this place. After 3 weeks in the agras-nisi-vrita wetland I think that it is an experience that everyone should live. I will definitely come back in the future and I hope to see all of you also there!!!

Vasilis was more than a volunteer in our project: he is our lucky charm! I hope the rest of The Greeks are half amazing as Vasilis.

Evelina and Yelda (our new volunteers from abroad) welcome welcome! I wish a good and fruitful staying in our project, full of birds and experiences.
