Volunteering in Agras – Vritta – Nisi Wetland

On the 1^st of March a festival performed by primary school children took place in the nearby village of Nisi. This yearly festival, known as the Xelidona, is carried out in the beginning of March to celebrate the change of seasons and welcome Spring.

On this day, the children left the school accompanied by their teachers, holding up some colourful signs with messages of good hope for March and playing with small wooden toys of little birds spinning on an axis, and enchanting a traditional song as they went along Nisi’s steep and narrow streets. As they proceeded with their walk they stopped in front of some of the houses and knocked on the door to receive some welcoming gifts from the friendly locals. As the tradition goes, they were mainly given eggs, and also beans. Surprisingly, amongst the normal brown eggs there were two green eggs! (And one of them was given to me). Later on, I came to known that Nisi has become a famous village in the area for its green eggs. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to eat my green egg for someone from the volunteer’s house ate it before I did. So, perhaps I’ve lost my only opportunity to ever have a green egg (hope not).

It is important to say that the Xelidona Festival has given me the first opportunity to take part in a local festivity, introduce myself and speak a little bit about Brazil to the local children. Besides, it has given me the chance to get to know another village within the singular area of the wetland and experience some of its beautiful tradition. I sincerely hope to be engaged in a similar event soon, so that I can meet more interesting people and get to know the local culture even further.

 No primeiro dia de março, participei de um festival local desenvolvido por crianças da única escola primária do vilarejo de Nisi. Este festival anual, conhecido como Xelidona, ocorre sempre no início do mês de março e tem o intuito de celebrar a mudança de estações e dar boas-vindas à primavera.

Neste dia, as crianças de Nisi saíram acompanhadas pelos seus professores, segurando pequenas placas com mensagens de esperança para março e brincando com brincos de madeira de passarinhos que giravam em eixos, cantarolando uma canção tradicional enquanto caminhavam pelas íngrimes e estreitas vielas de Nisi. Durante a caminhada, paravam em frente algumas casas e batiam à porta para receber presentes de boas-vindas dos amigáveis moradores de Nisi. Como manda a tradição, as crianças recebiam principalmente ovos, e tambem grãos de feijão. Surpreendentemente, dentre os ovos que lhes foram dados havia dois ovos verdes! (Dos quais um foi dado a mim de presente). Mais tarde, soube que Nisi tornou-se um vilarejo localmente conhecido por seus ovos verdes. Infelizmente, não tive chance de comer o ovo verde que me foi dado, porque alguém da casa dos voluntários o comeu antes que eu pudesse fazê-lo. Então, é provavél que eu tenha perdido a única chance de comer um ovo verde (espero que não).

É importante dizer que o Festival Xelidona deu-me a primeira oportunidade de participar de uma festividade local, apresentar-me e falar um pouco sobre o Brasil às crianças locais. Além disso, este festival ofereceu-me uma grande chance de conhecer mais um vilarejo nas imediações da singular área protegida de Agras, Nisi e Vritta e vivenciar um pouco sua admirável tradição. Sinceramente, espero em breve poder participar de um outro festival local e conhecer ainda mais profundamente a cultura local.
